Hey! Do you need a helpful reminder that not everything in politics is terrible right now? This is for you.
New San Jose City Council member Lan Diep held up a Captain America shield while he took the oath of office on Tuesday, January 24. Diep explained in an interview that he choose the shield as a symbol of the “kinds of things [he strives] for: equal justice, fair play and democracy.” He explained that it wasn’t intended as a protest of the president, but that it seems local government will soon play a larger role in their constituents’ lives, and the shield reminds him “of what America aspires to be.”
Diep is also the son of Vietnamese refugees (born in Houston), which seems particularly meaningful on a day when Donald Trump is planning to sign an order restricting refugees for no tangible reason. Truly, we need the values Captain America—and, by extension, Diep—stands for right now.
