Get a First Look at “Super Nintendo World,” the Nintendo Theme Park

I see what they did there.

Yes, our childhood dreams of a Nintendo theme park are soon to be fully realized in the real world, and it’s being handled by Universal, who know a bit about creating immersive theme park worlds. We’ve heard talk about this deal for months now, but an announcement and imagery today finally gives us a real idea of what to expect from “Super Nintendo World.”

The image above is concept art for what the eventual theme park, at Universal Studios Japan, is expected to look like when it arrives in time for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. It lines up pretty well with what’s promised in the press release: “expansive and multilevel environments filled with unprecedented, state-of-the-art rides, interactive areas, shops and restaurants, all featuring Nintendo’s most popular characters and games.”

Not only does it look like you’ll really feel as though you’re walking around a level straight out of a Mario Bros. game, but this is clearly just the beginning, as the release mentions that Universal is working closely with Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto on the accuracy of “other globally popular Nintendo characters.” While Miyamoto’s input would likely be invaluable on bringing any Nintendo property to life in the real world, his personal credits include Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and The Legend of Zelda—a series that rivals Mario Bros. in immersive theme park appeal.

If you can’t afford a plane ticket to Japan, Universal Studios in Orlando and Hollywood will receive their own versions of Super Nintendo World at some—not nearly soon enough—point in the future.
