Good Girls Revolt Canceled by Amazon, but There’s Still Hope for the Series

With Rogue One’s Jyn Erso staging a coup against the Empire and real-life journalists vowing to stand their ground against president-elect Donald Trump, I smell rebellion all around. But like the Star Wars one-shot says, rebellions are built on hope. That’s why I’m not not too worried about Good Girls Revolt, the retro drama which was just canceled by Amazon.

The retro drama centers on a group of female researchers at a fictional weekly newspaper in 1969. Despite advancements in civil rights, women in the newsroom still find themselves in low-level, low-paying editorial position. Even when they’re making generous contributions like assisting with a story or even writing, their names never make it on the bylines.  The show is an adaptation of the novel by  Lynn Povich, which was inspired by frustrating real-life events.

According to Variety, this may not be the be-all and end-all for the show. Sony, the studio behind the series, is reportedly planning to shop it around elsewhere. While not traditional, this route isn’t particularly new. Just this year, ABC canceled their drama Nashville, only for it to be picked up by CMT. Girlfriends spin-off The Game lasted for three seasons at the CW before BET scooped it up and kept it going for six more. Similar occurrences for shows like The Mindy Project, Arrested Development and Community.

So yes, there is hope that these kick ass women fighting the patriarchy at their Newsweek-like paper will live to rebel another day.
