Emilia Clarke Joins Cast of Han Solo Star Wars Movie

Mother of... gundarks?

This week, in late-breaking Star Wars news: it’s been confirmed that actress Emilia Clarke, who you probably know most from her role as Daenerys Targaryen on HBO’s Game of Thrones, has joined the cast of the upcoming Han Solo spinoff movie–which, to date, still doesn’t have a title. (In the meantime, can I propose a couple temporary suggestions? A Solo Star Wars Story? Han Solo and the Kessel Run?)

The character Clarke will be playing is still a secret, but according to StarWars.com, “Clarke’s role will round out a dynamic cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures.” She joins Alden Ehrenreich, whose casting was announced in August, and Donald Glover, who was cast last month.

Some fans are already speculating over whether Clarke will in fact be taking on the role of Han’s first wife Sana Starros, which would make this casting news… less-than-great, given that Sana is a woman of color and the film was reported to be actively searching for a WOC to play the part. However, since we don’t know who Clarke has actually been cast as yet, I’m willing to reserve judgment until we know for certain. That being said: Star Wars certainly likes to cast their fair share of brunettes, huh?

What was your reaction to this news, TMSers? Are you feeling good about Clarke joining another big franchise, or are your emotions more tepid? Let us know in the comments!
