Captain America: Civil War had a lot of ground to cover, and it dropped viewers right into the thick of things, especially where Black Panther was concerned. It might not have seemed too jarring for comic book fans, but the Wakandan hero’s backstory was mostly left out, which will be rectified in his upcoming solo movie, in keeping with the rest of Marvel’s solo heroes—maybe.
Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman explained as much to Yahoo Movies, saying that Civil War was simply a “jumping-off” point. He told them, “If you saw the tease at the end [of Civil War] in Wakanda, that’s more mystery there so I think there’s a lot to reveal about the character. There is definitely more of his origin in Black Panther. You’re going to learn about Wakanda, its culture, its traditions, the past. You can go through all the comic books and know that there’s more Panthers that have existed in the past—that’s origin.”
However, it’s still a little ambiguous as to whether the movie will be an “origin story” or simply find a way to work those details into a post-Civil War Black Panther story. I’m not necessarily anti-origin story, but it can be disappointing for fans to wait for so long for their hero to finally get a movie adaptation, only to retread the very basics of the character and then still have to wait several more years for a movie that expands further—if a sequel ever comes at all.
On the other hand, with Black Panther being a title passed down through generations, as Boseman mentioned, that rich history—and that of the fictional nation of Wakanda—are worth exploring. It’ll be interesting to see what director Ryan Coogler does with that material.
