All is not well with Diggle. He ended last season in a tough spot, having to kill his brother after the latter betrayed him. When season five rolls around, he’ll still be dealing with the consequences.

“He’s stationed in Chechnya,” executive produce Wendy Mericle told TV Line. “He’s still in the military, and he’s very much a man without a state. He’s away from his family, and he’s away from the team, so he’s away from that family. He’s trying to figure out how he can get that sense of himself back after killing his brother.”

If he needs help finding himself, the answer lies within Katy Perry’s inspirational anthem, “Rise.” Seriously, watch that video (in which she nearly dies over and over again until coming out on top at the end) and try not to feel as though Mount Everest were a mere hill. Not feeling it? Cool, let’s move on then.

As Steve McQueen’s former right hand man sorts his feelings abroad, some new faces will pop up to claim his spot back in Star City—much to his chagrin. “He’s not going to love all these little upstarts, trying to take over his role,” she added.

Those newbies include Rene Ramirez who goes by the name of Wild Dog (played by Rick Gonzalez), Adrian Chase who will take the codename Vigilante (played by Josh Segarra) and Evelyn Sharp a.k. Artemis (played Madison McLaughlin) who we met last season when she masqueraded as the Black Canary. “But he’ll adjust. He’s going to find some common ground with Wild Dog, and that will help take the sting out of it.”

On the other hand, Felicity’s (played by Emily Bett Rickards) journey will go in the opposite direction. This season, it looks like she’ll take on an elevated role that goes beyond acting as Oliver Queen’s heartbroken love interest. “We’re positioning her to do something in the second half of the year that is really, really key, and that isn’t about her relationship with Oliver or even necessarily her father or her mother,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly, per PopSugar.

Arrow returns to the CW Network on October 5.
