With all those other heroes crowding the screen in a movie called Captain America: Civil War, it’s easy to start thinking of Cap’s new movie as another Avengers flick (and to then write jokes to that effect on the Internet, if that happens to be your job), but Chris Evans has made it clear that’s not the case.
Despite the fact that most of the current Avengers will appear in the movie, as well as Spider-Man and Black Panther, Evans assured us all in the spring edition of Disney’s D23 Magazine that Civil War will be all about Cap (and Bucky, probably … and friendship—or romance, depending on your level of shipping):
Even though there are a lot characters, the focus is on Steve and his struggle. Especially his struggle with Tony Stark.
It’s exciting to see a guy who’s as optimistic and as selfless as Steve be met with letdown, betrayal, frustration, and selfishness. There are events and people in his life that test him—that challenge him and force him to reevaluate who he is and what he wants out of life.
Honestly, the Marvel movies have turned my ambivalence toward Cap around and made me really appreciate his “struggle” with altruism in a complicated world where he’s pretty powerful but definitely not the most powerful. It’s really what I’d like to see from Superman on DC’s end, although that God-like power changes the story a bit, but that’s a conversation for another time.
While Tony Stark had a bit of a crisis with feeling like a regular guy in over his head, Steve somehow manages to be much easier to relate to on that level, which should make him fit the emotional anchor role for this storyline really well.
