George Miller Confirms There Won’t Be a Furiosa Movie (for a While, at Least)

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, George Miller confirmed our deepest, darkest fears: he won’t be making a Furiosa-leading Mad Max sequel–for now, at least. According to him, he needs some time to work on something else before diving right back into the wasteland. He said:

I’m not sure if it’s the very next movie I want to do. I’ve got something a bit smaller before we go back out into the wasteland … Something more performance-based and so on, just to clear the exhaust.

Given Miller’s damn near obsessive attention to detail and insistence on incredibly fleshed out and meaty backstories, giving him time between movies to recuperate and really develop a great idea seems like the way to go. While I’m sad we won’t be getting a Furiosa movie soon, it’s exciting to see that he hasn’t dismissed the idea entirely. He goes on to explain that he finds “her backstory really interesting,” suggesting that he’ll be drawing from the aforementioned rich character history to create whatever Furiosa movie we may get.

This isn’t to say we’re going to be completely sans-Fury Road in this coming year. We may, after all, be getting a proper black and white version of Mad Max: Fury Road this year. It’s also nice to know that whatever debate Miller and Warner Bros. had about which Max sequel to make first seems to mostly be settled with Furiosa as a (hopeful) frontrunner.

Personally, I’m just looking forward to living in a world where that terrible, awful, sad Mad Max: Fury Road Furiosa comic isn’t the only additional Furiosa content we have. She deserves so much better.
