Margaret Cho Family Dramedy Highland In Development at Amazon

Amazon Prime has a new project in the works: a dramedy starring Margaret Cho with Alcatraz co-creator Liz Sarnoff as writer. Cho will play a version of herself that moves in with her “dysfunctional family who now runs a pot dispensary” after going through court ordered rehab. Cho, who proclaims her weed prowess is only second to Snoop Dogg‘s, has her own Kush titled “Margaret Cho-G,” and has been an outspoken activist about marijuana prohibition (in addition to LGBTQ+ and feminism) sounds perfect for the role.

I’m very excited, not only because I think it’ll be entertaining, but also because the world might finally be ready for Margaret Cho on TV. All-American Girl was the first show to feature an Asian-American family at its center (and the only other show to do that so far is Fresh Off the Boat), and as a result bore a lot of scrutiny. The show only ran one season, and Cho has spoken about the difficulties during production including pressure on her to lose weight (which did a lot of harm to her body), producers suppressing her writing voice, and lot of criticism from both Asian American and non-Asian American audiences. I believe Amazon is smart enough to avoid the mistakes ABC made and Highland will be a show that lets Margaret Cho be Margaret Cho. What do you think?
