Rumors that Warner Bros. would love to see Ben Affleck star and helm a solo Batman film (or perhaps even a trilogy) have circulated since last summer, and today, Total Film published Batfleck’s thoughts on the matter:
Look, if I could make it work, yeah, obviously it would be like a dream. The trick is, as to any movie, is to make sure that you—if you’re going to direct it—that you can make it good. You’ve got to have the right idea and the right take on it. Broadly speaking, it’s something I’d be open to, for sure. It’s a very exciting idea.
Oh, phew! He’ll only do it if it’ll be good. That’s a relief!
Batman v Superman producer Charles Roven admitted “we’re just at the beginning of the question,” elaborating that the script would have to be “good enough” and that calendars would need to be rearranged and planned. Right, right.
It seems to me like the only way this wouldn’t happen would be if Batman v Superman ended up a box office bomb. Plus, these movies take a long time to put together, so I guess the eventual Batfleck trilogy wouldn’t come out until Christopher Nolan’s Batman films felt like more of a distant memory. However, the longer Ben Affleck has to wait, the older his Bruce Wayne will be. Perhaps he’ll end up doing a Batman Beyond twist on the tale? That, at least, would be something different.
