Tomb Raider Movie Reboot Seeks A Female Director

Recommended Videos

Much like the videogame franchise for Tomb Raider, which earned its reboot stripes in 2013, so too will the accompanying film franchise for Tomb Raider receive a reboot — and it’s currently seeking a director. Rumor has it that Kathryn Bigelow, Catherine Hardwicke, and Mimi Leder are the three names in the roster; IMDB still lists Tricia Brock, although she’s been said to have left the project. Given that the 2001 Angelina Jolie-fronted fixture had a dude director, it’s cool to see a list of ladies considered to helm the next endeavor.

It is worth noting also that Sarah B. Cooper got the first-billed story credit on the 2001 film; also those old Tomb Raider films — despite being widely panned at the time — weren’t that bad. Luckily, in the decade since the other Tomb Raider flicks came out, we as a society have grown to not only tolerate but adore female-fronted action films, and plus, the entrenched systemic sexism in Hollywood film studios has ended! Right? … Uh, right?

Could be better. Although the Tomb Raider reboot seeks a lady director, Evan Daugherty (writer for the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, Divergent, and Snow White and the Huntsmanhas been tapped to write the script. So, this Tomb Raider reboot will be penned by a man, which would probably be fine except for the fact that his most notable writing credits are films that did not exactly wow us. Would it be too much to ask for a writer with a more well-paved track record when it comes to writing woman-fronted films? Is it also too much to ask that Tomb Raider have a woman writer, director, and star? Sigh.

Anyway, jury’s still out on who’ll get cast as in the lead role. After Jennifer Lawrence says no (because, come on, we all know they’ll ask her), who do you think they’ll cast? Who do you wish they’d cast?
