Katherine Heigl and Alexis Bledel star in a new film called Jenny’s Wedding. A less political or groundbreaking lesbian film than something like Freeheld or Carol, it tells the story of a woman named Jenny (Heigl) who wants to marry her partner, Kitty (Bledel), and has yet to come out to her family (Tom Wilkinson, Linda Emond, and Grace Gummer). Jenny’s Wedding was written and directed by Mary Agnes Donoghue (who also wrote female-led films like Beaches, White Oleander, and Veronica Guerin). The trailer seems to give away the whole sappy melodrama: Jenny comes out to her family, they’re not thrilled at first, her sister’s the first one who’s supportive, she pushes forward to get married anyway, her mom comes around (you kind of get the feeling her dad will too), and cue happy wedding! So, this film isn’t earthshattering, despite the Coming Out of the Closet angle.
Then again, maybe that’s exactly what makes this film so revolutionary. It’s not an indie, “edgy” lesbian film. It’s not a film set at a time when being LGBTQ+ was never spoken about. (The dad even acknowledges “I know times have changed. I read the papers. I watch TV. But we’re ordinary people, not rebels.”) There’s no “you’re no daughter of mine!” scenario. There’s no overt political message. It’s basically the same kind of mainstream, schmaltzy melodrama starring Katherine Heigl that straight people get. And it has a great cast and a female writer/director to boot. Progress?
