Pull It Together: Red Sonja, Captain Marvel, Batgirl, and More!

We've got issues. Lots of issues.

Welcome to Pull It Together, where the goal is to narrow the massive field of comic book titles to the ones you shouldn’t overlook. It isn’t about what’s on my pull list, it’s about what could be on yours!

It’s that time of the month again! No, not that time of the month, Red Sonja. It’s time to put in your pull requests for new series and trade paperbacks! And boy is there a lot to cover in January! New collections of Hawkeye, Birds of Prey, Black Widow, and Coffin Hill; as well as a full hardcover collection of Greg Rucka’s Veil, a story about a mysterious woman with deadly powers. And the new series! There’s Unbeatable Squirrel Girl; Gail Simone’s Conan/Red Sonja team-up series; Operation S.I.N., a Peggy Carter miniseries; Star Wars #1, the triumphant return of the franchise to Marvel comics; Lady Killer, a black comedy about a Stepford Wife who moonlights as a hired killer; and others that have descriptions too complicated to be part of this list sentence.

There’s new Adventure Time series Marceline Gone Adrift, in which Princess Bubblegum strips Marceline of her powers and fires her into space, only to feel terrible about it immediately and set out to find her friend in the cold black of the universe. And then there’s Princeless Pirate Princess, a follow up series to Jeremy Whitley’s 2012 Princeless, the multi-ethnic-ly cast, all-ages tale of princesses saving themselves, now with pirates.

There’s also two titles who are getting brand new creative teams in January, making it a good month to try out a new series or re-try one you wanted to like before. Dr. McNinja‘s Chris Hastings and Adventure Time comics artist Zachary Sterling will be taking over the main Adventure Time comics title starting with Adventure Time #36. And none other than Ms. Marvel‘s G. Willow Wilson will be taking the writing helm of X-Men, yes, the current all female X-Men team, beginning with X-Men #23.

So get ordering! Letting your comic shop know in the next week will mean that all the issue you order will properly count towards sales numbers for the comics, supporting those small series that don’t have the big clout of having “Batman” or “Avengers” in their title. I don’t want another She-Hulk on my hands, folks.

What’s on tap this week? Continuing issues of Wytches, Coffin Hill, Hexed, and Fraggle Rock, among others, but here are the new beginnings and conclusions that you shouldn’t overlook:

Susana Polo thought she'd get her Creative Writing degree from Oberlin, work a crap job, and fake it until she made it into comics. Instead she stumbled into a great job: founding and running this very website (she's Editor at Large now, very fancy). She's spoken at events like Geek Girl Con, New York Comic Con, and Comic Book City Con, wants to get a Batwoman tattoo and write a graphic novel, and one of her canine teeth is in backwards.
