HBO Isn’t Playing Around with Epic Game of Thrones Promo

Game of Thrones is coming: Did you bring your coat? It was back in early March that HBO originally greenlit a series about George R. R. Martin’s series of novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. Now we’re getting confirmation of a 2011 release date, most likely in spring, and some sweet, dark, jittery footage to whet our appetites for the series.

The project appears to be turning into an epic HBO fantasy affair. When one of the series’ writers, David Benioff, was asked what he was working on back in 2008, he teased the series as such:

“I’m doing a series at HBO. A crappy way of describing it would be The Sopranos in Middle Earth. I was a huge fantasy geek growing up. I was the dungeon master in my D&D game. Actually, most writers I know were the dungeon masters.”

There’s also to be an episode penned by Jane Espenson, who wrote my fourth-favorite episode of Firefly, “Shindig,” along with several other fantasy and science-fiction opuses.

And the power behind the scenes is to be matched and challenged by that on screen, with Sean Bean (the voice of Emperor Martin Septim in Oblivion, and the role of Boromir in the Lord of the Rings films, among many other worthy credits), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey (Sarah Conner of the Sarah Conner Chronicles), and Peter Dinklage (the dwarf from In Bruges).

With so many powers combining, it promises to be an immersive, well-made, well-acted, all-around-awesome fantasy series. So without further ado, here’s a teaser:
