Terminators Getting New Video Game, Probably Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

Do you really need to be back?

Does it feel like the early 90s in here to anyone else? It should, because you’re getting a brand new video game based on the first two films in the storied Terminator franchise. Publisher Reef Entertainment has just bought the Terminator game rights from StudioCanal, and have a game based on the first two movies in development right now.

Here’s what Reef’s spokesperson had to say about it: “We are studying all aspects and influences of the Terminator universe defined in [The Terminator] and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. We have started on our journey and are drawing on all the diverse materials available to produce a high-quality, authentic and exciting Terminator video game.”

Even as a big Arnie fan, I have little faith in this being a good game. Only two Terminator games–one of which is only almost a Terminator game–are well-liked, and the rest are from middling to despised.

The publisher’s history doesn’t inspire much hope, either. Reef published the Wii port of Sniper Elite, one of many Wii ports of Xbox 360 and PS3 games that tend to, well, suck. One of their few original IPs, Utopia City, was widely panned. Most notably, Reef is also publishing a Rambo game, which is by all accounts shaping up to be incredibly mediocre when it launches this winter. So if they’re looking to scar our love of 80’s action blockbusters, they’re on the right track.

But there’s still hope for this one being solid, since its developer has yet to be announced. And while I highly doubt that Mr. Schwarzenegger will be back to reprise his role, Michael Biehn’s recent multiple stints as a video game voice actor suggest he’d probably be up for another crack at Kyle Reese. Even so, the cons seem to outweigh the pros here.
