Little Women Adaptation Being Scripted at Sony

Our Adorable Past

Every generation has their Little Women movie adaptation, and Sony has decided that it’s time to make another one.

The American novel has had a movie adaptation for five of the last century’s ten decades, not to mention two separate television shows in the 80s, a musical, and an opera. The central role of Jo has been played by Ruby Miller, June Allyson, Katharine Hepburn, and Winona Ryder. The last time it was a movie, however, was 1994, and I hesitate to mention this but that was nearly twenty years ago.

So, what does Sony have in store for this new revisitation of Louisa May Alcott‘s beloved book? The screenwriting task is going to Olivia Milch, daughter of Deadwood creator David Milch. Olivia has served as producer on her dad’s projects before, but this appears to be her first screenwriting gig. Robin Swicord (writer on Matilda and The Curious Case of Bejamin Button) and Denise Di Novi, (producer behind The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, are on hand to produce.

Novi and Swicord were the writer/producer team behind 1994’s Little Women, one much beloved by the kids who grew up on it. Of course, in the screenwriting stage it’s much to early to look for casting info, but Empire Online has a good idea when they suggest that one of the actresses from the 1994 adaptation, Ryder or Claire Danes, or another actress who played a March sister in the last movie be brought into play Marmee this time.

She's spoken at events like Geek Girl Con, New York Comic Con, and Comic Book City Con, wants to get a Batwoman tattoo and write a graphic novel, and one of her canine teeth is in backwards.
