The Marvel Cinematic universe has been vague on Nick Fury’s actual rank. We know he’s at least a colonel, but he’s also been referred to with the title of director. Well, now he might want to have a talk with Robert Redford‘s Captain America: The Winter Soldier character. Because if he is who Redford says he is, he might have a better clue than we do about Fury’ his specific job status.

It was reported a few weeks ago that Robert Redford was in talks to appear as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s “senior leadership” in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. How senior, and exactly who he’d be portraying, was left unclear. Spinoff Online got to talk to the actor during a press event for his upcoming The Company You Keep, and asked him about this senior leader.

“Well,” said Redford, “the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The head of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Look out, Samuel L. Jackson, you might want to hide the keys to the helicarrier while you still can. Honestly, though, it’s unsurprising that themes of the bureaucratic fallout from Nick Fury‘s mustering of the Avengers and his refusal to nuke Manhattan during the Battle of New York might be a part of CA:TWS, as it was a notable part of the deleted scenes of The Avengers.

That leaves Redford on a cast and character list that includes Captain America, Bucky, Dr. Zola, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Black Widow, Falcon, Sharon Carter and more in one movie. Is it 2014 yet?
