What's with the name?

Allow us to explain.

Pretty Pretty Princess

More Twisted Disney Princesses

It’s been a while since we looked in on Jeffery Thomas’ Twisted Princess series, let’s see what happened… oh, a half-dozen new character designs? Well, lets take a look. Thomas’ has been redesigning the women of Disney canon since at least 2010 (when I was working at Geekosystem) with one theme in mind: what if villains won? What if out of tragedy, the lady leads, in some cases now ghostly or undead, became incredible badasses determined not to accept their fate simply because their first rescuers failed?

You can check out the whole gallery of them (including explanations of each redesign) at Thomas’ Deviantart page.

*I acknowledge that not all the characters in this post are princesses. Before somebody points that out in the comments.

Not all these characters are….ooooooo dang it!

Kinda disappointed that they bleached Tiana’s skin. I’m pretty sure darker skinned folk don’t bleach out in death, do they?

I went to the artists’ page and found out he also is of color. I don’t know why that makes the whitewash even more disappointing. If it’d come from a white, it’d have been super-duper typical…

    Tinkerbell scares me the most.

I don’t think her skin is bleached at all. She became a frog, so her skin is now green. What I think you’re referring to is the pink part located on her arms and back. It looks like her dress is now made out of real lilies and these pieces are attached to her by vines. I think they’re just large pieces of flower (considering she’d be a frog now and the flowers would be much larger).

Frogwash. (The term was too fun not to write :P)

Actually, it’s sort of brilliant on a conceptual level: this is about the *villains* winning, after all, and whitewashing a person of colour is a villainous move if ever I saw one!

These are great. I don’t suppose you’ve heard SJ Tucker’s Song about Wendy and the Pirates? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVChxIU7crU

Aww, I wanted a Cinderella with a glass sword.

Maybe too much Face Off time, but I’d love to see this as a challenge.

He did Cinderella! But he made her a creepy potato sack scarecrow for some reason. (I forget the story he had for it.)

My favorite of the entire series is Wendy. She looks BADASS.

  • Carmen Sandiego

That’s the first thing I thought of when I saw it.

You know, I thought it was whitewashing too. But upon closer inspection, what they did is they gave her pale gray-green frog skin, with little spots and blotches.
