It’s probably not the confirmed casting news you’ve been hoping for, but Lynn Cohen, a stage and film actress best known for her role as Miranda’s nanny Magda in HBO’s Sex and the City, will play the lovable 80-year-old Mags, a former Hunger Games victor from District 4.
In the novel, Mags serves as a mentor to Finnick Odair, and they both end up playing pivotal roles in the Quarter Quell, the 75th Annual Hunger Game in which old victors are pit against one another anew. Although she doesn’t say much, Mags grows on Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) very quickly–she can make fish hooks out of anything (being from the fishing district and all), and Finnick is extremely loyal to her.
A seasoned actress, Cohen has also played Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the Steven Spielberg film Munich, and has appeared on Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU. She’ll also appear in David Wain’s upcoming romantic comedy They Came Together starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.
We’re particularly interested in how Cohen will interact with the not-confirmed-but-likely Sam Claflin as Finnick — their relationship is paramount to the characterization of Finnick, and let’s just say we expect to have a lot of Mags-related feelings come the film’s release in theaters.
Director Francis Lawrence is expected to begin production on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire later this year. The film will open on Nov. 22, 2013.
May the odds be ever in your favor, Mags!
