Agents of SHIELD Spin-Off Still Possible Despite Initial Reports, Low Finale Ratings

Will they, or won't they?

Will they, or won’t they? This isn’t just a question about whether Mockingbird and Hunter will make it as a couple. It also seems to be the eternal question about their Agents of SHIELD spin-off series. First, they were totally a go. Then, they weren’t. Now, apparently, the project is back ON. Well, sort of.

Apparently, it’s not a matter of if, necessarily, but when. Variety spoke with ABC President Paul Lee ahead of ABC’s upfronts:

Lee raved about SHIELD and Agent Carter, which returns midseason with Season 2, revealing, “it certainly is a possibility of spinning them off.” The spinoff was rumored to focus on Adrianne Palicki’s Bobbi Morse and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter, and Lee admitted, “We absolutely love those characters on SHIELD,” so much so that they didn’t want to mess with success by attempting a spinoff at this point.

In fact, despite Agents of SHIELD having its lowest ratings ever for its recent season finale, it continues to be a strong performer for ABC overall. According to Variety:

It continues to be a strong performer in DVR playback, with last week’s episode spiking more than 80% in 18-49 (more than any other Tuesday show) to surge ahead of timeslot rival NCIS: New Orleans. One plus for ABC was that, since the network typically struggles in the 10 p.m., the two-hour score for SHIELD was above average for the net.

So, it seems that the ball is still in play as far as a spin-off is concerned. We probably just won’t be seeing it any time soon. That’s fine. We’ll be busy watching Season 2 of Agent Carter to notice.
