Woman steps in after a mother is verbally attacked at Walmart. Then she uncovers a shocking case of alleged financial abuse: ‘everybody looked at me’
A stranger struggling at a checkout can be easy to ignore. But publicly humiliating someone because their payment does not go through is another matter, especially when that person is already crying with a baby in her arms.
That is what TikTok creator Ashley (@ashmfrancisco) says she encountered during what was supposed to be a quick Walmart trip. She heard a woman crying near another checkout lane while a second shopper allegedly yelled at her loudly enough to attract attention.
Ashley could have finished shopping and left. Instead, she stepped into the confrontation, and what the young mother allegedly told her afterward turned a dispute over unpaid groceries into something much more serious.
Things were not quite that simple
Ashley says the young mother had a baby strapped to her chest and was crying while another customer berated her. The woman allegedly called her poor, criticized her for having a child, and told her she should give the baby up because she could not afford diapers.
According to Ashley, the mother did not argue back as the shopper continued yelling at her. Ashley stepped in and told the woman to back away, and store security eventually came over. “She was like, ‘I’ve never had anybody defend me like that before ever in my entire life,’” Ashley recalls. The mother then allegedly explained what had happened at checkout.
Ashley says the mother’s card was declined while buying baby essentials, despite having saved a couple thousand dollars. When she checked her account, only $10 remained, and she suspected her daughter’s father.
According to Ashley, the mother said her daughter’s father had recently left her for a coworker. She claimed he had taken money before and that her bank card was missing. Ashley told her to contact the bank immediately.
The mother reportedly had a friend who worked at the bank where she held the account. She called the friend and asked whether her child’s father had recently been there. The friend allegedly said she had seen him repeatedly over the previous four days, which could explain the missing money. The video does not provide bank records confirming the allegation. Ashley then decided to help.
She says she paid for the mother’s items and added another box of diapers, wipes, more formula, and clothes for the baby. She also bought the mother pajamas and encouraged her to go home, take care of herself and her daughter, and rest. But Ashley also urged her not to ignore the missing money.
The mother reportedly hesitated to press charges because he was her child’s father, but eventually contacted police. Ashley says they did not share a joint account and he had no permission to take her money.
Ashley says the 20-year-old mother had little support around her. She was no longer speaking with her parents, and the one friend she had reportedly did not want to become involved because the friend knew both her and her former partner. Before leaving, Ashley gave the mother her phone number. She says the two even made plans to have a picnic together.
Similar cases have raised concerns about what can happen when someone close gains access to another person’s savings. One woman said her boyfriend transferred $1,500 from her emergency fund without permission. In another case, a woman claimed her parents emptied her savings account after going through her phone.
Viewers overwhelmingly praised Ashley for getting involved. “This is what women are supposed to be doing for other women lifting them up, not tearing them down,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “May your pockets never run dry….and hopefully she is pressing charges on him.”
