In a video uploaded to her TikTok account,TikTok user @meitham said that her parents, whom she described as very strict, went through her phone and found things they shouldn’t have. She explained that because of their discovery, they punished Mei by taking away her driving privileges, withdrawing money from her savings account, cutting off contact with her friends, and unenrolling her from college, among other things. Feeling “helpless” after experiencing this, Mei said she decided to run away from home.

As previously mentioned, TikTok user @meitham posted a video on her account where she talked about how her parents took away most of her privileges after finding certain things on her phone that they shouldn’t have seen. Unable to handle the isolation from losing all these things, Mei says in the video that she decided to leave home.

Mei explains in the video that before leaving, she decided to leave her parents a note. She then mentions that as soon as they went to sleep, around 10 PM, she left her house and drove to the airport, where she stayed until about 6 AM before boarding a plane to New Jersey. Mei says that before getting on the plane, she received many calls from her parents urging her to come back home, but she ignored them and got on the plane anyway.

Mei adds that after she landed, she received many angry texts from her parents, which were not delivered to her while she was in flight. She also apparently learned that they had called all her friends, their parents, and some relatives, asking about her and her whereabouts. She says she received a call from the New Jersey police, who told her they had filed her as a missing person. Mei says that almost around the same time, she saw officers gathering around her and realized they were there for her. She says she approached them, introduced herself, and was then taken by them and questioned for hours before being taken to a police station for detention. There, she was supposedly questioned again for hours by police officers and social workers.

Afterward, Mei says her mother flew to New Jersey to pick her up, and they stayed at a hotel before returning home. Speaking about the current situation, Mei states in her video that she is back home, but her father has completely cut her off financially, which means she has to pay for her college tuition herself. She also says that her father has threatened to call her university and cancel her enrollment.

What people are saying about @meitham’s video

@meitham’s video, where she talks about running away from home after her parents punished her for what they found on her phone, has gained a lot of attention on TikTok. While some people shared their thoughts about Mei’s situation, others shared their personal experiences of dealing with something similar.

User @ninarunnina wrote, “Cut off contact as soon as you can.” User @unknown_6l6 said, “Why would you tell them where you would be at?” User @shyla_o8 commented, “I waited for my mom to involve the police and that’s how I never saw her again. That was last year now I am soon 18 in 3 months.” User @mad.at_u stated, “I have similar experiences and it breaks me that we’re literally just teens trying to enjoy our lives, as long as we’re not crossing the line we should be fine, setting and respecting each other’s boundaries are important, respect should go both ways, not one, so does love. Breaking privacy isn’t protection, it’s an abuse of trust.”

Why do kids and teens run away from their homes?

According to an article by Evolve, many people, mostly minors, run away from home due to family issues. In 2016, the National Runaway Safeline received over 33,00 calls from runaway teens. Their report based on these calls states that:

  • 10% reported leaving home due to verbal abuse.
  • 7% reported leaving home due to physical abuse or assault.
  • 1% reported leaving home due to sexual abuse.

The source also highlights that the numbers in each category could vary when certain factors are considered, one of which is that some individuals may feel uncomfortable sharing their experiences about specific types of abuse due to the stigma surrounding it. This may lead to fluctuations in the percentages of each category mentioned above.
