Woman orders fries, onion rings and sauces. Then Burger King adds a mystery fee: ‘I can confirm’
A little extra was never on the menu

Ordering fast food should be simple: choose your food, check the total, and pay. But one woman claims the price of her Burger King order suddenly increased at the very last step. And the extra charge wasn’t something she had agreed to.
Her order included fries, onion rings, a Coke, and several sauces. The self-service kiosk displayed £21.71, but the amount reportedly jumped to £23.80 when she tried to pay. That left £2.09 unaccounted for, raising questions about where the additional charge came from.
TikTok user Libby Grimes (@libbymegs) shared the experience in a video that has gained 27.6K views. While fast-food pricing surprises are frustrating enough, Grimes had another problem. Even the restaurant staff apparently couldn’t explain the difference.
Something wasn’t adding up
In the video, Grimes films the Burger King self-service ordering screen, showing the items in her cart and the final total. Her selection includes regular fries, a regular Coke, 20 onion rings, BBQ mayo, two Spicy Smokehouse Ketchup sauces, and an XL cheese dip. Someone off-camera can also be heard saying, “I can confirm,” as they look at the screen.
The kiosk lists a subtotal of £18.99, with £2.71 in tax, bringing the displayed total to £21.71. However, according to Grimes, the card reader requested £23.80 instead. “Catching Burger King Scamming,” she wrote over the footage.
The difference might seem small, but an extra £2.09 amounts to nearly a 10% increase. More importantly, customers generally expect the total displayed before payment to match what they are charged.
Some viewers immediately assumed the difference was tax. “Tax,” one person commented. Another insisted, “It literally says 0 tax on screen, clear.”
But Grimes pushed back against that explanation. “Even the manager was confused, definitely not tax unfortunately,” she replied.
That made the situation even stranger. If the additional amount wasn’t tax, what exactly was Burger King charging her for?
The video prompted accusations that the company was taking advantage of customers who might not notice a small difference at checkout. “The company definitely knows what their doing….they just don’t want people to notice,” one commenter alleged.
Another person joked, “That’s the ‘You still saved 50% by not going to Five Guys’ tax.”
But one response offered a particularly interesting detail. A commenter who appeared to work at Burger King claimed they had encountered a similar problem at their location.
“This happened in my bk to a customer the other day, it’s only added onto the card reader but doesn’t happen if you order at the front till,” they wrote. “I refunded so many people and put through their order again for the right amount.”
Grimes confirmed that staff had suggested the same workaround during her visit. “That’s what they said to us, we then had to order at the front,” she responded.
The exchange suggested that the problem might have involved the self-service payment process rather than the actual menu prices. It also raised questions about how many customers might complete their purchases without noticing a difference.
Customers shouldn’t have to inspect every transaction for unexpected price differences. A routine food order shouldn’t require that much scrutiny.
Whether the additional £2.09 resulted from a technical problem or something else remains unclear. What stands out is that the customer apparently had to switch to the front counter to avoid paying more than the displayed total.
