Woman enters adult novelty store and stacks up $108 worth of items. Then she pulls up to the register and brings out an impossible payment method
Poor woman.

Retail clerks working specialty counters are no strangers to quirky customers. But one adult novelty store worker was left speechless after a shopper attempted to finance bedroom novelties with an unexpected card.
Creator Holly (@hollyhuggz) broke down the wild exchange in a viral TikTok video that pulled in tens of thousands of views from amused users who couldn’t fathom the logistical mix-up. The encounter reportedly occurred after she spent considerable time assisting an energetic customer, whom she playfully dubbed “Sally Jane.”
After totaling up the haul and asking for standard tender, the shopper allegedly whipped out a government benefit card. The blunder left the cashier in stitches, forcing her to explain the strict legal boundaries separating nutritional safety nets from adult recreation.
An enthusiastic adult store haul ground to a halt at the cash register
According to Holly, the customer arrived eager to browse the store’s intimate offerings. After touring the displays and carefully picking out various items, the shopper made a last-second detour back toward the shelves to complete her cart with personal lubricant.
“Sally Jane comes in today, and she’s looking at the toys, and she’s all hyped up wanting this and wanting that,” Holly recalled while laughing uncontrollably on camera. “Comes up to the counter, got all of her stuff laid out, and she goes, ‘Ooh, wait a minute. Need to go back there and grab me a bottle of lube.’”
Holly tallied her items, bagged them, and presented the final bill of $108.75. By the usual script, Holly then asked whether she preferred to settle up with cash or card. To this, the customer assured her she had a card ready to go. However, the mood instantly shifted when the shopper proudly extended an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card across the counter.
Seeing the EBT card, Holly was stunned and had to break the news that government-funded food assistance cannot be processed by adult stores. “Look, I am okay taking credit cards, debit cards. I’m good. I’m good with that. But, baby, when you bring out your EBT card, there ain’t nothing I can do for you!”
Public assistance guidelines strictly prohibit non-grocery purchases through an EBT card
The mix-up touches on a surprisingly frequent point of confusion surrounding public aid. Administered under the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), EBT cards function similarly to debit cards. But the USDA’s official SNAP eligibility guidelines mandate that funds can only be redeemed for staple grocery goods meant for home preparation and consumption.
Federal regulations strictly bar retailers from processing SNAP benefits for hot prepared meals, alcohol, tobacco, vitamins, pet supplies, cosmetics, or any general non-food merchandise.
Certain low-income programs provide a separate Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) cash benefit that can be drawn from ATMs. However, specialized retailers like adult novelties, liquor stores, and gaming venues are legally prohibited from integrating EBT point-of-sale systems under federal welfare reform laws.
A Pew Research Center analysis on federal assistance shows that tens of millions of Americans rely on SNAP to combat food insecurity each month. However, payment network processing guards ensure that non-qualifying merchant category codes automatically reject transactions that fall outside approved food classifications.
Holly closed her video by noting that while she had no interest in publicly shaming the shopper, boundaries remain boundaries. “EBT cards are for food only, not to get your freak on!” she joked. In a retail landscape full of diverse checkouts, remembering which wallet pocket holds grocery credits versus weekend spending remains vital before ringing up a hundred-dollar basket.
