Server finds phone after teens allegedly dine and dash on $300 tab. Then mom calls police on herself to get it back: ‘Ma’am that is stealing’

A case of instant karma

Samantha (@misssamanthab on TikTok) made a video sharing an experience she had while working as a server one night and waiting on a group of teenagers. She explains that the teenagers ordered a bunch of food and asked for boxes for leftovers, but when she went to bring them the boxes, they had already left. It was a classic dine-and-dash, leaving a $300 unpaid tab.

However, the situation took a turn when Samantha found that one of the teenagers left his phone behind. Samantha took the phone to her manager for safekeeping, and her shift continued.

The teen’s mom came to collect his phone

During Samantha’s shift, she said that the mom of the teenager who left his phone behind came back to retrieve it. The mom spoke with the manager, who questioned her and told her about the unpaid tab that her son and his friends left behind. The unpaid tab isn’t as damaging as the 500 teens who jumped on Burger King tables, but it’s still theft.

The mother defended her son and his friends by saying that they were just having fun and experimenting with the rules, implying that it’s no big deal that they skipped out on a bill. The situation escalated as the mom wanted her son’s phone back without paying the tab, which led to the cops being called. Once the cops arrived, Samantha recalls telling them about the situation and seeing it as the mom calling the cops on herself.

The cops got the teen from his mom’s car, and he admitted to leaving the tab. In the end, the mom paid the tab.

Commenters were shocked by the mom’s attitude

With the mom allegedly not being that bothered that her son and his friends tried to avoid paying for their food, countless commenters shared their opinions of her defense that the teenagers were just having fun and experimenting with the rules.

“That mom is the problem,” says one popular comment.

Another one reads, “If her teenager was a server and that dine-and-dash came out of his pay, mom would be pissed.” A reply to this pointed out that servers can’t legally be forced to make up for the loss caused to the restaurant by a dine-and-dash, but the main point of the comment was that the viewer believed the mom would behave differently if her son was the server who had to deal with a similar situation.

The commenters, it’s clear, are as baffled as Samantha that the mom didn’t seem to mind that her son stole from a restaurant.
