Woman buys $150 Frye boots at TJ Maxx. Then the cashier allegedly thanks her for not stealing: ‘Thank you for being honest’

She was making some bold comments

A woman alleges that a TJ Maxx employee told her, “Thank you for being honest,” while she purchased a pair of boots, a remark she interpreted to mean the employee thought she was capable of stealing them. In a TikTok video, Vanessa (vanessaknowsfashion) said she found the Frye and Co. boots she’d wanted, originally priced at around $300, for $150 at TJ Maxx in Prosper, Texas.

Vanessa said that while paying for the pair of boots, the employee and manager couldn’t find a security sensor. The manager later explained it hadn’t been attached because it could damage the leather, then pointed out where one could have been placed before leaving the scene.

“She was like, ‘You just don’t know how many things walk up out of here,’” Vanessa said, citing the employee’s remark. She said this further reaffirmed that the employee had thanked her for not stealing.

Vanessa was not there to play

Vanessa decided to play along. “So I was like, ‘Okay, I don’t get it.’ I was really wanting her to say, ‘Thank you for not stealing’ because that’s pretty much what you’re saying to me,” she said.

Vanessa also said that at some point, the employee realized she was trying to get her to say the quiet part aloud. “Okay, so she’s like, ‘Yeah, I mean, nothing towards you.’ Like, I think she was kind of getting that her microaggression had gotten underneath my skin, but she was like, ‘Oh, nothing towards you. It’s just that some things just, you know, walk up out of here,’” Vanessa said, describing their back-and-forth.

A friend that came to her rescue

Experiences like the one Vanessa had can be unsettling, so you would often try to seek solace in someone who perhaps understands you well and can help you cope. In Vanessa’s case, she was unsure whether she was “overreacting,” so she said she called a friend who is “super close” to her and “super calm,” and he said her reaction was justified.

Vanessa questioned the employee’s judgment in her case, pointing out that she was already at the register to pay for the item and could have simply left or used other means if she intended to steal. She concluded her video hoping such an incident would not be repeated.

In a separate video, Vanessa said she contacted TJ Maxx about her complaint. Customers can contact TJ Maxx to make a complaint when they’re away from a store in several ways. According to TJX Companies, TJ Maxx’s corporate parent, customers can call its customer service line at +1-800-926-6299, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST. Outside those hours, they can submit a complaint using the TJ Maxx Contact Us Form.
