Woman Stands in Self-Checkout at Walmart, Then When It’s Time for Her to Pay, a Worker Accuses Her of Stealing: ‘Check the Cameras’
Is it right for Walmart employees to interrogate you on whether the clothes you're wearing are yours?

In a TikTok video, @lifebytiffanynicole (Tiffany Nicole) said she went to Walmart and was harassed by an employee who accused her of shoplifting. This isn’t the first instance of reports about alleged mistreatment by Walmart employees.
Nicole said she was at the self-checkout when a worker allegedly asked if she wanted “these items,” referring to the Mickey Mouse jacket she’d walked into the store wearing. When Nicole told her it was her jacket, the worker apparently asked to inspect it, arguing that it looked like “one of our merchandise.”
Nicole said she stood her ground, even mentioning that she brought the item from Disney World, but the worker kept insisting on checking whether it was stolen. Reiterating her conversation with the worker, Nicole said, “This is my jacket, my sweatshirt. I just walked in, like, check the cameras. I don’t know what you want me to do.”
“What if you had purchased it at Walmart on a previous visit”
Nicole said that after a while, the worker left, and she proceeded to pay for her items, but she soon returned with a manager. They then told Nicole that she would have to go to the back of the shop, where they would read the number on the back of her jacket and check whether it matched their stock. When Nicole refused to indulge, they threatened her, saying they would call the police, prompting her to walk away.
Some people in the comments share her sentiments. One wrote, “What if you had purchased it at Walmart on a previous visit and they checked the number and it showed up as being something that is available in their store? This is out of control.” Another commented, “And if it was their merchandise that you had previously purchased?? Then what??”
A few others suggested Nicole file a complaint with Walmart against the incident. One user said, “As a Walmart employee myself, please file a complaint about this. They are not allowed to do that. They literally just had to look at the cameras. All they had to do is have AP look at the cameras when you came in and see and that would’ve solved everything. I’m sorry that happened to you.”
Some also narrated their own stories involving similar incidents. One user said, “I was chased in a mall once because they thought I stole pants…. the pants I was wearing were faded which I pointed out after she came running and screaming into the new shop I was in. she left.”
What happens if you’re caught stealing at Walmart?
According to Fighter Law, anyone caught shoplifting at Walmart may face both civil and criminal penalties. The severity of these penalties will vary based on state laws, the value of the stolen items, and whether the person has a prior criminal record.
Regarding civil penalties, Walmart might direct the return of stolen goods and may also seek monetary compensation through a civil demand. This is distinct from criminal charges, and non-compliance could result in a civil lawsuit. Criminal penalties can vary from a misdemeanor for items of lesser value to a felony for more expensive commodities. Consequences may include fines, probation, community service or imprisonment.
Given the many ways an individual who has been caught stealing can be penalized, it’s safe to say that Nicole wasn’t angry enough. Who knows, she might have just ended up like this woman who was handcuffed and accused of trying to dine and dash by billing her meal to a hotel room she wasn’t staying in.
