Woman boards an international Delta flight and sees the in-flight meal that has her begging the airline to stop: ‘BOLD choice’

A smelly flight for her.

Airplanes are a confined space, and that means sitting next to others up close and personal at 35,000 feet in the air. So when someone passes gas, you’d best believe others in the vicinity are able to smell it. That was the case for one woman aboard an international Delta flight, whose flying experience became a little unpleasant after passengers ate a bit too much curry.

The incident was shared by Erika (@erika_vision) on TikTok, with the caption saying, “chicken curry is a BOLD choice for airplane food to say the least @delta.” In her video, which has since amassed over 198,700 views, Erika gives viewers a quick peek at her flight journey—from the boarding gate to sitting in what appeared to be an aisle seat.

What caught viewers’ attention, however, was the story behind her caption. According to Erika, she was on a “large” international flight with Delta Airlines. Nothing particularly remarkable seemed to have happened with the flight itself, but when it was time for the in-flight food service, that’s when the situation seemingly took a dive for Erika.

Delta serving chicken curry gets mixed reactions

According to Erika, Delta Airlines decided to serve its 100-plus passengers a plate of chicken curry, a popular dish hailing from South Asia. While the dish itself doesn’t seem to have any issues, with some viewers even noting that it was “prob one of the best meals we’ve had in economy on Delta,” the aftermath of eating the chicken curry is what’s drawing conversation.

“Delta, please do not EVER AGAIN serve chicken curry on a large international flight,” Erika said in her video. “The odors produced by travelers afterwards were horrifying and the lines for the bathrooms were unending.”

If that wasn’t enough, Erika’s seating arrangement seemingly left her in the front lines of the unwanted gas attack. “I was in the aisle seat and I kept getting crop dusted with curry farts,” she said. At this point, we’re not sure which is worse: getting a whiff of “curry farts” or sitting next to a passenger who brought a container of hard-boiled eggs. Either way, neither sounds like a good option.

Viewers in the comment section shared their own smelly flight experiences and questioned why curry was even an option for an in-flight meal in the first place. “They did this on my flight from London this week and I was so confused as to why this was the option,” one viewer wrote.” Another viewer added, “Another reason why I always bring a mask on a plane.. there are unexpected times I need to put it on..”

Food high in sulfur can make your farts odorous

Some argued that it wasn’t the curry that was causing the gas, but “probably broccoli or some other vegetable.” According to HealthyFood, certain ingredients do cause farts to be smellier than others.

The outlet notes that vegetables that are high in sulfur tend to make gas emissions odorous, such as garlic, onions, leeks, tomatoes, ginger, legumes, coconut milk, curry powder, and even chicken, among many others. With many of the ingredients found in chicken curry high in sulfur and fiber, it’s no wonder the farts turn out unpleasant and frequent.

It also doesn’t help that you’re 35,000 feet in the air, which contributes to passengers needing to release gas. BBC reports that guts expand up to 30% due to air pressure drops, and air ends up getting trapped in the gut when the space needs to be filled, leading to bloating. When there’s bloating, it’s only natural that the body tries to relieve itself of the pressure through farting. So with the pressure at a high altitude and a mix of high-sulfur ingredients, it’s not a surprise that farts would turn into a smelly one.
