Puerto Rican man accidentally traumatizes a 7-year-old girl sitting next to him on a transatlantic flight: ‘I hope I did not ruin flying for you’

Long-haul air travel can test even the most seasoned flyers, especially when creeping delays eat into hard-earned vacation time. For Puerto Rican traveler Jared Ranahan, an agonizing airport ordeal went from a minor logistical headache to an emotional spiral. And in the process, he accidentally traumatized the unaccompanied minor seated beside him.
Ranahan recounted the guilt-inducing moment his travel-weary meltdown spread to an innocent child in a recent TikTok video. His story began with a series of cascading mechanical failures. But it ended in tears, an unplanned overnight layover, and a heartfelt apology to his innocent seatmate.
“I hope that you had a great time when you finally made it to the Netherlands. I hope I did not ruin flying for you, and I hope that in the future, when you’re seated next to other people, they are more emotionally put-together than I was on that flight,” he said.
Mechanical setbacks sparked spiraling anxiety on the tarmac
The ordeal began at Washington Dulles International Airport as Ranahan and his boyfriend boarded United Airlines Flight 946 bound for Amsterdam. Seated in the very back row of the cabin, Ranahan reportedly took the middle seat. He was flanked by his partner on the aisle and a seven- or eight-year-old unaccompanied minor in the window seat.
Ranahan’s hopes of a smooth departure faded when the aircraft taxied to the runway. The pilot then reportedly announced a mechanical issue requiring an immediate return to the gate. After a lengthy repair attempt, the aircraft pushed back a second time, only to be turned around once more due to an autopilot failure.
Having flown extensively, Ranahan realized the repeated delays now confirmed that the flight was doomed. With five hours ticking away on the tarmac, the crew was on the verge of timing out. This almost guaranteed that the flight would be scrapped for the night.
“I knew the crew was going to time out, I knew that just going back to the gate twice, it had just been far, far too long for this flight to actually take off.” So, Ranahan and his boyfriend were trapped in the sweltering cabin and began calculating the steep cost of the delay.
According to him, their European itinerary allotted just two days in the Netherlands before heading to Germany. Which meant that a missed connection wiped out an entire day in the country. For Ranahan particularly, the loss hit hard. He explained that he had previously lived in The Hague and had spent eight years anticipating his return.

At this point, Ranahan was overcome by exhaustion and catastrophic thoughts that he might never visit his former home again. He then claimed that he broke down into uncontrollable, body-racking sobs in the rear of the cabin. Hearing his distress, the young girl seated next to him also reportedly panicked.
Flying solo across an ocean without her parents and watching an adult passenger sob beside her, the child probably assumed the worst and began crying uncontrollably herself. The emotional scene reportedly prompted flight attendants to intervene. They escorted the minor off the aircraft just before the captain officially announced the flight’s cancellation.
While closing out his confession, Ranahan extended a public apology to the young traveler, hoping his tarmac tears didn’t leave her permanently traumatized by air travel. Also, despite losing an entire day to the delay, Ranahan confirmed that they eventually caught a replacement flight to Amsterdam. He and his partner managed a whirlwind 24-hour sprint to The Hague after all.
