White man berates Black family for practicing driving on public road. Then turns the tables and claims the father is racist
A heated confrontation that barely got resolved.
A Black father was helping his daughter practice for her upcoming driving test when he became involved in a heated confrontation with a white man who berated the family for practicing on the road. As tensions escalated, the confrontation led to the man accusing the father of being racist.
The incident was shared by Kevin Blue (@kevinblue345) on X, which has since amassed over 221,500 views since its posting. According to Blue, he accompanied his daughter to an area near the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Fremont, California, because she wanted to practice on the same routes that would be used during her driving test.
In the middle of his daughter’s practice, however, Blue claimed that a man had approached their vehicle and started yelling at his daughter through the window. He immediately jumped out of the vehicle and confronted the man for his behavior.
Man says father is racist for talking about ‘white privilege’
In the accompanying video Blue shared, he and the man can be seen already in the thick of the dispute. Blue can be heard repeatedly telling the man to “get away from my car,” while the man told the father that he was “not teaching her good.”
The man told Blue that he could do “whatever you want,” but at the same time, insisted that the family practice on a different road. “I asked you to practice somewhere else,” the man said before moving near Blue and yelling in his face.
“I’ma give you three seconds. If you don’t get out of my face, I’ma knock you out,” Blue told the man. Despite the warning, the man continued staring at Blue, seemingly challenging him. Blue argued that they were on a public road, and that he doesn’t “get to tell American citizens what to do on public streets.”
In their standoff, Blue claimed that the man was using his “white privilege,” but the man turned the accusation around and called Blue the racist one instead. “Oh, now we’re being racist? That was racist! You are racist,” the man yelled.
Blue asserted that the man was the one to approach them, saying, “You approached a Black man and his daughter. […] You told me that I don’t belong on [this] street.” However, the man continued to deny the accusation and reiterated that he only told Blue to practice somewhere else, but at the same time, agreed with Blue that it was a public street.
DMV requires students to have hours of practice
Those practicing for their driver’s license can use public roads, as long as they have a learner’s permit and are supervised by a licensed parent or guardian, or by someone who is over 25 years of age holding a California license. The DMV does encourage students to practice driving outside of professional training, as they are required to complete at least 50 hours of driving practice—10 of which are at night, and six from driving school.
“Why are you practicing where you don’t know anybody here?” the man said. “You don’t know the area. Do you?” Blue defended his daughter, claiming that she hadn’t broken any laws or done anything unsafe. With the argument seemingly going nowhere, Blue eventually told the man to just go home as he returned to his car.
X users’ reactions to the incident were mixed. On one side, users criticized the man’s behavior. “I’m white and I’m sick of these white motherf******,” one user said. Another added, “I hate the baby boomer generation.” A third user said, “He shoulda been done knocked his a** out..”
Others also defended Blue’s daughter for practicing in the area. “Last-minute practicing before you go to the DMV is a normal thing. He said they were right down the road from the DMV. I guarantee you he’s not the only parent doing this. I’ll probably do it with my son. The old man overreacted if that were white people wouldn’t have said,” a user said.
Some, however, agreed that the man was correct in accusing Blue of being racist. “Sounds kind of racist to me anyone that brings up a f****** race card you know it’s going to be a black man,” one user said. A second weighed in, saying, “You are racist the second you said ‘This white man.’ You had me won over on your side, until you pulled the victim of the white man card.”
