Virginia GOP rep’s ‘ditto’ to a racist radio rant just handed Democrats a weapon in the tightest House race of 2026

Foot-in-mouth disease.

Virginia GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans just handed Democrats a loaded weapon in what’s shaping up to be the tightest House race of 2026. After agreeing with a conservative radio host’s racist remark about House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Kiggans is now facing calls to resign from top Democrats, including the second-highest-ranking member of the party.

The controversy erupted during a May 11, 2026, interview on WRVA radio in Richmond. According to The Hill, host Rich Herrera was discussing Virginia’s recent redistricting battle when he told Jeffries to “get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia.” Kiggans didn’t just let the comment slide. She doubled down.

“That’s right. Ditto,” she said. “Yes. Yes to that.” The phrase “cotton-picking” has deep roots in slavery and sharecropping, and Merriam-Webster explicitly calls it “widely considered offensive” for its ties to forced labor under Jim Crow.

Kiggans later tried to walk it back

She claimed she was only agreeing with Herrera’s broader point that Jeffries shouldn’t meddle in Virginia politics. “The radio host should not have used that language and I do not, and did not, condone it,” she posted on X. But Democrats aren’t buying it.

Christie Stephenson, a spokesperson for Hakeem Jeffries, called Kiggans’ response a “stunning failure of judgment and leadership,” especially since she represents a district with a large African American community. Stephenson didn’t hold back, accusing Kiggans of craving “a return to the days of Jim Crow racial oppression in the South.”

Rep. Katherine Clark, the House Democratic whip, didn’t just demand an apology. She called for Kiggans to resign. “First they gutted the Voting Rights Act. Now they are using brazenly racist language to attack Black leaders,” Clark posted on X.

Even Kiggans’ opponent in the 2026 race, former Rep. Elaine Luria, piled on. “The racist comments proudly endorsed today by Jen Kiggans warning House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to ‘Get your cotton-picking hands off of Virginia’ are disgusting and beneath any elected official,” Luria wrote. “I grew up in the South. I know what these racist dog whistles mean.”

This is a full-blown crisis for Kiggans

She’s already in one of the most competitive House races in the country. The Cook Political Report currently ranks her seat as a toss-up, and Democrats are pouncing at the chance to tie her to this controversy. The timing couldn’t be worse for her.

Just last week, the Virginia Supreme Court nullified a Democratic-drawn redistricting map that would have shifted four Republican-held seats, including Kiggans’, in favor of Democrats. The ruling keeps the current map in place, which gives Democrats a 6-5 edge in Virginia’s delegation. But Kiggans’ gaffe could erase any advantage she gained from that decision.

Kiggans’ team is clearly worried. The National Republican Congressional Committee rushed to her defense, calling the outrage “performative” and pointing to past Democratic scandals. But the damage is done, and Democrats are already weaponizing this moment. Stephenson’s statement framed Kiggans’ comments as part of a broader GOP effort to roll back civil rights, tying her directly to what she called a “full-scale assault on Black representation.”

Kiggans is a second-term lawmaker who won her seat by just 2 points in 2022, flipping a district that had been held by Democrats for years. Luria is a retired Navy commander with a strong military background, just like Kiggans. Luria’s already using this incident to paint Kiggans as out of touch with Virginia values. “She should publicly apologize and denounce these racist remarks,” Luria said.

Democrats are framing this as part of a pattern

Stephenson’s statement explicitly linked Kiggans’ comments to the GOP’s broader efforts to weaken the Voting Rights Act and gerrymander districts to dilute Black representation. That’s a tough narrative to shake, especially in a state with Virginia’s history. Redistricting was already a flashpoint, and now, race is front and center.

Kiggans’ district includes Virginia Beach, a diverse area with a significant African American population. If she loses their support, she’s in real trouble. The question now isn’t whether this will hurt her—it’s how much. And with the Cook Political Report calling this race a toss-up, even a small shift in voter sentiment could be enough to tip the scales.
