[VIDEO] TMS Visits Uprise/Angry Women to See How 80 Female Artists Are Fighting Back

Recommended Videos

We went to The Untitled Space in downtown Manhattan to see Uprise/Angry Women, an exhibition with the works of 80 female artists who turned their anger and frustrations in this political moment into sculptures, paintings, and other works of art. In addition, a percentage of all proceeds go to the ERA COALITION and the Fund for Women’s Equality.

Curator and founder Indira Cesarine went through a huge number of submissions, with a dedication to incorporating all kinds of media and a diverse group of artists. The exhibition gave space to women of all ages and backgrounds to express their anger and gather in a show of solidarity as we reach the inauguration of misogynist Donald Trump. We saw a video from Rose McGowan, a mixed-media montage by Lili White, and so much more. There was a whole spectrum of reactions in the art, from laughter in a parody of our soon-to-be president to hurt in the gendered violence our country so often ignores.

Anger in women, as we know, is often painted as irrational, hormonal, or unimportant–even more so for women of color. Uprise/Angry Women shows that our anger is not only valid, but a vehicle for unity, creation, and change. The exhibit is open until January 28th, and I recommend making a visit if you can. You can read more about it here.
