Woman says Ulta cashier wouldn’t take no for an answer when pushing store credit card. Then the customer’s lie backfired: ‘I’m a felon’

Nowadays, it seems like most retailers in the United States offer some kind of store credit card. It’s very likely that a staff member has offered it to you at some point, and you’ve politely said no.
These offers often come with discounts and perks, but if you hear the pitch often enough, it can get frustrating.
One Ulta customer on TikTok said she tried a more creative way to shut the conversation down. However, she didn’t get the outcome she hoped for.
What Happened at Ulta?
In a video that has garnered over 1.7 million views, TikTok creator Bella (@highwaiianpizza) walks out of an Ulta store while describing what just happened.
“The cashier at Ulta wouldn’t take no for an answer whenever I told her I’m not going to get a credit card,” she says.
Bella says she tried a line she thought would immediately end the conversation.
“I said, ‘I’m a felon. I’m not gonna get approved,’” she recalls.
But according to her, that didn’t deter the cashier.
“You might,” she says the cashier responded.

“Cashier asked, I said no thank you. Manager was at the next register. Cashier asked again. I made eye contact and said firmly ‘I said no. Do not ask me again,’” one user shared. “Cashier asked again because we all know their managers say they have to get three refusals. I didn’t say anything else. I left my order on the counter in front of her and walked out the door.”
“The cashier at ulta asked and I said no then they asked for my email for the receipt and I gave it to her then my phone number for rewards and I gave it then she asked for my address and I paused and said what why?? And she goes for the credit card! I’m signing you up! And my husband was like SHE LITERALLY SAID NO!” another wrote.
“‘I have a mortgage in escrow, I’m not allowed to open new credit,’ is the only thing that has worked for me,” a third shared.
“Trust those employees DONT WANT TO ASK!!!! they have to!!!” a fourth added.
Why Do Retailers Push Store Credit Cards?
According to a blog post by Storis, these credit cards benefit the retailer’s bottom line. They can earn revenue from interest rates, monthly payments, and outstanding account balances.
Store credit is also a way for retailers to increase retention and encourage customers to purchase more expensive products.
It’s likely that stores train employees specifically to ask customers about this every time. According to a retail worker on Reddit, “There are training videos solely dedicated to pitching the credit card! We even have competitions and whoever gets the most per week wins something.”
Additionally, it’s important to note that most financial experts advise against getting store credit cards. According to CNBC, these cards usually have a low credit limit and high interest rates, often nearly double that of the average credit card.
