Woman Moves to New York and Stops To Help a Stranger on Sidewalk. Then She Realizes Who He Really Is and Ends Up in Court: ‘Really Good Start’
Maybe “mind your own business” isn't such bad advice after all
Moving to New York can come with a few unexpected lessons. But having to go to court just two weeks after arriving probably isn’t one most people expect. That’s one way to make a memorable start in a new city.
TikTok creator Naomi Baer (@tiktokstarnaomi) says she had only been living in New York for two weeks when she stopped to help a stranger on the Lower East Side. Trying to help someone who seems to need it didn’t seem like a big decision at first. She had no idea it would eventually leave her needing to go to court.
“So I moved to New York two weeks ago, and I am already needing to go to court,” Baer begins in the video. What followed also gave her a quick lesson in why people sometimes choose to mind their own business. According to Baer, it all started when she noticed a man drop a bunch of things on the sidewalk.
Not Quite the Welcome She Expected
Baer recalls stopping and helping the man pick up his things before stacking them together for him. She thought he was “a little bit weird,” but continued helping anyway. Then she claims she discovered the belongings she had just helped him collect weren’t actually his.
“All of a sudden, it turns out he was burglar, and he was stealing all the stuff, and I was helping him steal the stuff,” Baer explains. Her attempt to help a stranger had apparently turned into unknowingly helping an alleged thief gather the items he was taking.
The encounter then turned violent when another man tried to stop the alleged theft. According to Baer, the alleged burglar grabbed the man’s Louis Vuitton cane and struck him over the head with it.
Baer then stepped between the two men and called the police and an ambulance. The incident apparently followed her beyond the Lower East Side, as she told viewers that she now has to appear in court over what happened.
“And now I’m going to court to explain myself,” she adds. “Wish me luck.”
Baer didn’t provide more details about the upcoming court appearance or explain her role in the proceedings. Her video also doesn’t indicate that she has been charged with anything. Instead, she summed up her first couple of weeks in New York with a sarcastic caption: “Really good start.”
New Yorkers in the comments, however, had plenty to say about Baer calling the experience the “most New York thing ever.” Several thought the fact that she stopped and got involved in the first place made it exactly the opposite.
“Welcome to New York. Lesson One: MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS,” one person wrote. “This is not the ‘most New York thing’ ever at all cause, we New Yorkers, we mind our business lmaoo,” another commented.
Someone else joked, “*The most transplant thing ever. New Yorkers wouldn’t do that.” Another viewer offered a shorter version of Baer’s experience: “‘I didn’t mind my business so now I have to go to court.’” “Correction… least New York thing ever lol,” another added.
For Baer, stopping for a few moments to help someone apparently turned into police, an ambulance, and a future court appearance. But judging by the comments, New Yorkers thought her first lesson in the city was much simpler: sometimes, minding your own business saves a lot of trouble.
