Trump went from calling Kimberly Guilfoyle a ‘friend for a long time’ to saying ‘she was not a member of my family’

"We don't talk anymore"

On Tuesday, newly appointed White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia said the Trump administration had asked former U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign. The same day, speaking to reporters outside the White House as he departed for Alaska, Trump, who once spoke fondly of her, said, “She was not a member of my family.” He added, “I guess she dated my son a long time ago.”

Trump also said Guilfoyle was doing a “good job” in her role but that he didn’t like what he read about her. He was referring to a Wall Street Journal article published last week that alleged Guilfoyle had asked Eric Deters, a retired lawyer and Trump supporter, to wire $100,000 to her American Express “in a way that wouldn’t leave a paper trail” before her confirmation to her role.

The article alleged that Guilfoyle had promised Deters access to the bigshots within the Trump administration in exchange for the favor. It also noted that Deters eventually refused to pay Guilfoyle.

As Trump’s comments about Guilfoyle made headlines on social media, a post by MeidasTouch‘s Acyn Torabi showed Trump showering her with praise earlier this year, suggesting their relationship was far from as complicated as it is now. In the video, during a speech, Trump introduces Guilfoyle.

He said, “She’s an inspiration to a lot of people, especially if you happen to be Greek. Kimberlay. Kimberly Guilfoyle has been my friend for a long time. I love calling her Kimberlay. That’s my little pet name, right?” He added, “But you are the greatest. And I heard they love you over there. I hope you come back here in 12 years or whatever the term is. Come on up here, Kim. Stay alongside of us.”

Deters said he would be seeking legal action against Guilfoyle

A BBC article reported that Guilfoyle’s lawyers said she was asking Deters to pay her for speeches and consulting work she had done on his behalf before becoming ambassador. The same article said Deters denied the claim, calling it a “complete lie.” He also apparently said he would take legal action against Guilfoyle over the matter.

A CBS article highlights how Deters actually managed to opt out of the payment. He said he came up with an excuse, saying his wife wouldn’t be okay with it. He also said that, at the time, he didn’t have the amount she demanded available.
