Top Gun 3 is very much still a go!

After the success of 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, fans (me) have been waiting for a continuation of the franchise. Once we got a taste of the new Dagger Squad, we wanted more and a third installment is apparently a priority for Paramount.

As part of the merger, co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, spoke about their plans moving forward. Which includes a continuation of some of their bigger franchises, like Star Trek and, of course, Top Gun. “Top Gun is a priority for us,” said Goldberg. That’s all I need. Well, I need it to happy sooner rather than later but hey, at least it is a “priority.”

It had been announced that Top Gun 3 was happening but, for the most part, we just heard whispers of the film. Star Glen Powell spoke about it, we spoke with Lewis Pullman about it, and the cast does seem to all want to return to San Diego and the sun to head back to Top Gun. I just hope that the story is where it needs to be.

Joseph Kosinski brought Maverick to us with Tom Cruise and writers Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. The sequel, which came 36 years after the original, had Maverick being the “old man” of the crew, which included Goose’s (Anthony Edwards) son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller).

It had all the right beats as the first, with Powell playing Jake “Hangman” Seresin and bringing his best Ice Man (Val Kilmer) vibes to the squad. And we got to see a lot of closure for Maverick throughout the film. But it is hard to bottle that excitement twice. So rushing a third film was never in the cards but it does seem like everyone wants it to happen sooner rather than later.

Until we know more, at least I have the joy of knowing that Maverick isn’t going to be the last time I’ll see my Daggers.
