The Trailer for Syfy’s Canceled Tremors Series Shows Us What Could Have Been

What's shakin' Kevin Bacon

Fans of the 90’s horror comedy film Tremors were thrilled when Syfy and Blumhouse announced a planned television series reboot of the cult franchise, with original star Kevin Bacon set to reprise his role as hapless Graboid hunter Valentine McKee. Unfortunately, our hopes were devoured out from under us when Syfy decided not to move forward with the series. Now, Kevin Bacon has released a trailer for the canceled series, giving us a sneak peek at what could have been.

The trailer takes us back to the town of Perfection, where a washed up Valentine McKee must contend with a fresh batch of Graboids 25 years after the first attack, but to do that he’ll have to overcome age, alcoholism, and a hero complex. The pilot episode was penned by Andrew Miller (The Secret Circle) and directed by Vincenzo Natali (Westworld), and featured Hunter Parrish (Quantico), Toks Olagundoye (Steven Universe), and Emily Tremaine (Vinyl) as McKee’s estranged daughter. The trailer contains the dark humor and silliness of the movies, and Bacon is delightful as always, but it clearly wasn’t enough to sell Syfy on the series.

Bacon has been interested in rebooting the series since 2015, saying “It’s the only character I’ve ever played that I was interested in exploring 25 years later. [Tremors] is a really good movie. I don’t go back and watch my movies but because we were doing this one, I had to go back and look at it. It’s just the idea of this loser who is living a very ordinary life and has an extraordinary experience with these monsters and becomes, for a moment, a hero.”

There’s no word yet on if or when Syfy will make the pilot episode available to the public. For now, we’ll just have to make do with the original film, its five direct-to-video sequels, the 2003 series reboot and multiple video games. Reboots from the 80’s and 90’s are increasingly popular, but results can be hit or miss. Starz just canceled Ash vs. Evil Dead after three seasons, while YouTube Red ordered a second season of the Karate Kid spin-off show Cobra Kai. Both shows brought back their original actors, capitalizing on the nostalgia boom of the favored decades.

What show or series from the 80’s and 90’s would you like to see rebooted? Tell us in the comments.
