The Rock proves he’s a serious actor in this new A24 trailer
I should start this by saying: Movies about boxing, wrestling, and UFC fighting get me. I don’t know why, but I’d be the cliché wife in a boxing movie if I could. So the new trailer for The Smashing Machine already has my attention.
Benny Safdie is bringing us the new movie about UFC fighter Mark Kerr (played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson). And from what we can see in the trailer is that it does feel like one of those kinds of movies where all the typical beats of a man in the ring movie will have their moment but I do love that A24 is bringing us true stories like this.
After the studio’s The Iron Claw, I did hope they’d allow more true stories to come to life with their specific brand of storytelling. Luckily, I got that with The Smashing Machine. The film is described as follows: “The story of legendary mixed martial arts & UFC fighter Mark Kerr.”
Actors known for one genre or another often try to break that mold. When it comes to Johnson, he’s known for a great deal more than just being an “action” star or a comedic actor. He’s had to prove himself as an actor outside of his wrestling career in the WWE.
But with films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and more, he’s shown he can be funny and charming in a film. Now, he and Emily Blunt are reuniting after their Jungle Cruise film to tell Kerr’s story. It is going to be a completely different vibe for them as actors working together and I’m excited to see how The Smashing Machine is going to work. If the two of these actors can be in something as silly and funny as Jungle Cruise and then come into an A24 movie and knock it out of the park, that’s going to be something to behold.
Until we see The Smashing Machine on October 3, we can just rewatch this trailer again and again.
