The Counter-Attack: Cashier Grabs Gun From Confused Bandit to Thwart Gas Station Robbery 

A gas station robbery in Guyana took an unexpected turn when a cashier grabbed the suspect’s gun after he placed it on the counter while sorting through the stolen cash. Suddenly finding himself on the wrong end of his own weapon, the robber reportedly grabbed the money and fled.

According to Kaieteur News, the robbery happened last Friday evening at Hinds Gas Station in Linden. Police said an armed man entered the business at around 7:15 p.m. and demanded that the female cashier hand over the money from the register.

The cashier initially complied, taking cash from the counter and handing it over. Then the suspect made one rather consequential mistake: While sorting through the money, he reportedly placed his firearm on the counter within her reach. Unluckily for him, the cashier seemed to pick the first option in the fight-flight-freeze stress response menu. 

That Was Probably the Wrong Place to Put the Gun

As the cashier handed over another batch of money, she seized the opportunity and grabbed the firearm from the counter. As shown on the footage, she then pointed it toward the suspect, instantly reversing who had control of the situation.

The man apparently wasn’t interested in sticking around to negotiate the sudden change in circumstances. Once he realized the cashier had his weapon, he reportedly took the cash and fled the gas station.

For all the drama of the reversal, the suspect still escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. The cashier, however, had managed to get the firearm away from him, bringing the armed portion of the robbery to a rather abrupt end.

The Cashier Turned the Tables in Seconds

Footage of the robbery gone wrong subsequently circulated online, where viewers reacted to the cashier’s quick thinking. Considering the entire reversal hinged on the suspect briefly putting down his own weapon, there wasn’t exactly a generous window of opportunity to work with. 

“Survival skill on point!!”, said one commenter on Facebook. Another one chimed in with a more comedic angle, “Daz definitely his 1st day as a bandit??”

The video also turns an otherwise straightforward robbery into something relatively more unusual. One moment, the cashier was handing money to an armed man. Moments later, she had possession of the weapon he brought into the station.

Police told Kaieteur News that investigators have since developed leads and are making progress toward identifying the suspect. Authorities had not publicly identified him at the time of the report, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police reportedly believe the suspect may be a man who was recently released from prison after serving time for a similar offense. 

The robbery may have ended with the suspect escaping with the cash, but it wasn’t exactly a successful heist. The cashier saw her chance and took it. The robber, meanwhile, got away with the cash, but apparently had to leave one particularly important piece of robbery equipment as a trade.
