‘That Is Crazy to Me’: Woman Gets Bill of 14.92 for a 11.99 Sandwich, Then the Shopkeeper Tells Her the Amount Includes Payment for Toasting the Bread
It is crazy to think of the things they are now charging people for
Living paycheck to paycheck means every dollar must count. Shariel (@shyrayel_) ‘s TikTok video from a few days ago shows how frustrating it can be to pay miscellaneous charges added to bills without notice.
Shariel said she went to a sandwich shop and ordered a large sandwich priced at 11.99, but when she got the bill, it came to 14.82. She said she initially thought the amount had shot up because of taxes, but then realized it shouldn’t have gone up so much. “I understand tax and everything, but I was like, 14.82 kind of sounds a little high.”
Then she seems to have asked someone at the shop about the high amount, and they apparently told her they charged her a dollar and fifty to toast the sandwich. Expressing shock upon learning the information, Shariel said, “A dollar fifty? A dollar and fifty cents to get something toasted? You gonna charge a dollar and 50 cents just to get something toasted?”

She also stressed that had she known about the charge, she would have toasted the sandwich at her home . She said, “ I could have did that sh** at home haha … A dollar 50 to get something toasted is crazy to me. That is crazy to me. 50 cents. Okay, cool. A dollar 50. Y’all got me f***** up haha.”
Shariel’s willingness to take matters into her own hands after facing disappointment reminds me of this Boston woman’s case. Although the context may be a little different, the essence remains the same.
The comments section of Shariel’s post reveals an interesting story. Apparently, her experience isn’t unique, as others share similar experiences. One user wrote, “Please… I went to a drive through yesterday and she said 9.87 is the total get to the window and gives me a receipt for 11.87 and she said it’s $2 to run your card. What are we even talking about.” Another user said, “I had the same reaction when they said it was $1.20 to add cheese to my whopper jr. I could see 50¢ but $1.20!?!”
A few others described what they would have done if they had been in Shariel’s place. One user commented, saying, “I literally would of left the sandwich.” Another user remarked, “I would have said I don’t want the sandwich.”
Turns out, others have also raised issues about the toast tax on social media
Besides Shariel, at least one other person has taken to social media to reveal that they were charged a fee for having their bread toasted. In a video @daydaytvuncut1 uploaded to TikTok last week, he confronted a Subway employee over this issue.
Some in the comments section supported the customer. However, a few also pointed out that being charged some money for having a sandwich toasted isn’t uncommon, which is kinda sad if you come to think of it.
