Texas animal shelter lists woman’s dog for adoption, then allegedly dismisses her pleas to take down the post: ‘No need to get upset’

Imagine adopting a dog and giving it a loving home, only to discover that the very same dog was being put up for adoption by an animal shelter without your knowledge. That was the predicament Bella (@bellasnextchapterr) found herself in. What should have been a quick correction turned into a source of irritation when a Texas animal shelter allegedly ignored her request to take down the adoption listing.
Bella expressed her annoyance in a TikTok video, claiming that the Texas-based dog rescue, Cody’s Friends Rescue, had posted an adoption listing for her own dog, Obi, under the name “Buck.” She explained that she had adopted Obi, a Great Pyrenees, just months earlier, and that the photos used by the shelter were supposedly taken by her friend when Obi was first found at the side of a road.
“My friend sent this post of a Great Pyrenees that’s up for adoption. His name’s Buck. Very cute dog,” Bella said. “That dog is literally my dog.” She then shared a photo of what looked like Obi relaxing in her home, sporting a goofy yet undeniably adorable expression.
Bella says she tried to warn others inquiring about Obi
According to Bella, Obi had initially been taken to Cody’s Friends Rescue by her friend when he was found abandoned, before she adopted him, which might explain why the animal shelter had photos of the Great Pyrenees. Bella claimed that Obi has since been taken care of by her and is “very well loved” since the adoption.
Worried about the adoption listing, Bella said she left comments on Cody’s Friends Rescue’s page after noticing many were inquiring about taking home Obi. “Hey, these pictures are from a few months ago when he was ditched on the side of the road. He has since been adopted by us, and he has a very loving home, and he’s not up for adoption,” Bella allegedly said in the comments.
Bella said she gave the animal shelter the benefit of the doubt, thinking they might have a dog that resembled hers. Nevertheless, she reached out to Cody’s Friends Rescue across several of their social media platforms and requested that they take down the listing.
According to Bella, the shelter had acknowledged her concern by liking her comments. However, they allegedly didn’t make any move to rectify the situation and were still actively accepting adoption applications, which prompted Bella to make the TikTok video.
In a second video, Bella shared the conversation she had with Cody’s Friends Rescue. While the shelter did take down the listing on social media after her attempts, Bella’s ire turned to how the shelter supposedly responded to her messages, which she described as “unprofessional.”
Texas shelter takes full responsibility for the mistake
When Bella tried to explain her concern, the shelter allegedly responded with, “Isabella, no need to get upset. It was just an accident. He is shown as adopted.” Bella argued that Obi’s listing showed him as available for adoption, but Cody’s Friends Rescue insisted he wasn’t listed as available anymore before apologizing for the error.
Viewers shared their own experiences with Cody’s Friends Rescue. “I work in vet med and have unfortunately worked with Cody’s Friends before. They suuuuuuuck,” a viewer wrote.
Some alleged that the shelter was running a scam by taking application fees and using photos of dogs found on social media: “My sister who lives in San Antonio is currently filing a lawsuit against them, they took pictures of her dog from her Facebook and put it up as for adoption and used her actual age and her name because my sister had posted that stuff.” However, this allegation remains unverified, as other viewers claimed they were to adopt a dog from the same shelter.
Cody’s Friends Rescue has since shared a statement on their social media following the incident. They apologized for making the mistake and said they would “take full responsibility for it.” They claimed that the incident stemmed from an administrative error in which they accidentally reactivated Obi’s archived profile after confusing him with another dog with the same name. The Texas shelter also apologized to Bella for how the communication was handled and said that she “deserved better” from the shelter.
