The long-awaited reboot of Sailor Moon is just around the corner, and now we finally get to catch a glimpse of just how animation is actually going to look. And oh my gosh, is it gorgeous. My heart is a kaleidoscope right now, guys.

The way that their eyes are drawn are going to take getting used to—Usagi’s pupils in particular feel a teeny bit hollow—but I’m really fascinated by the elegant, long-limbed style. It’s very evocative of Naoko Takeuchi’s original drawings, but still pays homage to the old anime as well (Luna tosses herself onto that wall exactly the same way in the original series’ first episode, and there’s of course Sailor Moon’s famous pose at the end).

The fact that they’ve gotten Kotono Mitsuishi, the first person to ever play Usagi, to reprise her role only adds to this sense of nostalgia. She does sound a bit older, of course, but it works with the more serious style we’re seeing so far.

The song in the trailer, by the way, is called Moon Pride and is performed by Momoiro Clover Z. I do not know any Japanese save for the occasional word I can glean from an anime theme, but I’m gonna take a wild guess and say that it’s actually about Sailor Moon, which is not something the old series did as often. Also, badass guitar solos much? Yes please. I would like eleventy more with choreographed fight scenes to match.

All in all, this is exciting as heck. July 5th can’t come soon enough.
