Agents of SHIELD just got its third actress of color in a recurring role. But who is she?

Well, we don’t know. Well, I mean we know: Ruth Negga is an Irish-Ethiopian actress with roles in Irish film, various British television shows, and lately a crop of roles in The Samaritan, 12 Years a Slave, and World War Z. But she might be most visible to the nerd crowd for playing Nikki on Misfits, a character who gained teleportation powers after receiving a heart transplant from a man who had them.

But all we know about her character on SHIELD is that she’ll be playing an unnamed recurring character. According to Deadline, there is “no intel on her role.” That could mean pretty much anything in a show like SHIELD. Negga could wind up as a SHIELD agent or specialist, called in on occasion to give expert opinions on the biology of superpowers.

She could also wind up with superpowers of her own, in which case she could either represent the onscreen presence of an established Marvel superhero (one possibility might be Monica Rambeau), or be an entirely original superhero creation.  Either way, we likely won’t find out until later in the fall, once her episodes begin to air.
