Russia and Ukraine agree to stop all military action in the town of Oleshky after a surprise intervention by Melania Trump
The ceasefire is to begin on October 29, 2026.

Russia and Ukraine have reached a formal agreement to halt all military action in the town of Oleshky. The White House has said that the localized ceasefire comes after a surprise intervention by First Lady Melania Trump. The pause in fighting is intended to allow humanitarian aid to reach the area and to facilitate a civilian evacuation through a secure passageway.
Oleshky is located in southern Ukraine and has been under Russian control since February 2022. The situation there is critical. The city is a front-line zone currently on the brink of disaster. According to NBC News, the population has dwindled from roughly 24,000 residents before the war to between 1,700 and 2,000 people today. Most of those remaining are elderly residents. There are also about 50 children still in the city.
The infrastructure is in terrible shape. Additionally, the city lacks electricity, heat, and running water. Many buildings were damaged by shelling. The area also suffered massive flooding in June 2023 after the Kakhovka Dam collapsed.
‘Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster’
Melania Trump initiated these talks after learning about the conditions in Oleshky during a U.N. General Assembly event in September. She worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms of the ceasefire. The First Lady expressed her clear focus on the humanitarian mission.
“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water,” she said in a statement.
The ceasefire is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 29. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian ombudsman and lead negotiator, noted that the local pause will actually begin on Tuesday, two days before the main mission starts, per the Associated Press. He said the effort would last several days. “The operation will be carried out gradually and is extremely challenging to implement,” Lubinets said. Before aid can enter, teams must clear mines from the routes leading into the city.
Russian officials confirmed their participation in the agreement
Gen. Valery Gerasimov stated that Russian forces will cease fire on the Kherson axis starting at 4 a.m. Tuesday in Moscow. He mentioned that Russian forces will carry out engineering reconnaissance to ensure the safe movement of the humanitarian convoy. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov praised the first lady’s involvement.
He noted that the effort was discussed during a phone call between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. “We welcome the efforts of the First Lady of the United States, Mrs Melania Trump, who has made a significant contribution to the coordination of the humanitarian operation,” Peskov said.
The humanitarian plan includes allowing non-military teams to visit residents in their homes. “Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” Melania Trump said. Yana Lantratova, Russian human rights ombudswoman, confirmed she participated in the negotiations. She said the priority is providing food, medicine, and hygiene products to those in need.
This mission is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to address the conflict
President Trump has been pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reach a deal with Putin. The administration has recently taken several steps regarding the war, including waiving new Russia sanctions and reaching an agreement to import diesel fuel. Meanwhile, tensions between Washington and Kyiv remain high. There have been ongoing issues involving the Starshield satellite internet system and the status of American Patriot missile interceptors.
The humanitarian effort in Oleshky will be documented by an unnamed American media organization. Newsmax has reported that its cameras will be granted exclusive access to document the effort. The United Nations has also reacted to the news. Secretary-General António Guterres expressed hope that this local pause could serve as a step toward a broader, lasting peace.
The logistical challenges remain significant, considering the roads are currently dotted with burned-out cars and drones continue to buzz overhead. The local government in Ukraine has long appealed for a ceasefire to organize these evacuations. It seems this specific initiative could act as a model for future humanitarian missions if it succeeds. For now, the focus is on the elderly and children who have been trapped in the city for months.
The success of this operation depends on the strict adherence to the ceasefire by both military forces. It is a complex process that requires careful coordination between parties that have been in conflict for years. Everyone involved appears to be aware of the stakes for the remaining civilians in Oleshky.
