Rep. Ilhan Omar issues warning after federal agents raid her Washington DC home three weeks before midterm elections
‘I will not be silenced.’

Federal agents conducted a search of Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home on Monday, October 12, 2026. This development arrives just three weeks before the midterm elections. The congresswoman from Minnesota is currently seeking her fifth term in office. Omar has been a prominent critic of President Donald Trump.
The operation involved agents from Homeland Security Investigations. This agency is a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Department of Justice (DOJ) described the action as a judicially authorized search warrant. It is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.
According to NBC News, one source familiar with the matter indicated the probe involves alleged immigration fraud. It reportedly touches on paperwork submitted by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar arrived in the United States from Somalia during the 1990s. She became a citizen in 2000.
The street surrounding the congresswoman’s residence was blocked off
Agents were observed removing boxes labeled as seized property evidence. The Department of Justice has not provided specific details regarding the scope of the case. A spokesperson stated only that it is part of a federal criminal investigation.
Omar took to X to address the situation directly. She described the search as an attempt to target political enemies. She further characterized the event as an attempt to weaponize federal law enforcement. Omar stated that President Donald Trump has targeted her with baseless lies for a decade. She called the raid the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation and defiantly stated that she will not be silenced.
The timing of this search has sparked significant controversy. The DOJ traditionally avoids taking investigative steps that could influence an election. While there is no blanket rule, this is a long-standing unwritten practice. Prosecutors are expected to avoid actions within 60 days of a vote.
Randall Eliason, a law professor at George Washington University and a former federal public corruption prosecutor, noted that the raid appears to break with that established practice. He emphasized that the goal is to avoid the appearance of interference in the political process.
The most famous test of this norm occurred in 2016
According to Al Jazeera, then-FBI Director James Comey disclosed developments regarding Hillary Clinton’s emails just 11 days before the election. A 2018 review by the DOJ inspector general labeled that conduct as extraordinary and insubordinate.
Trump spoke to reporters on Monday regarding the search. He stated that he had nothing to do with the operation. He told the press that it was really up to the DOJ and also remarked that investigators were looking at her very carefully.
The president has frequently criticized Omar over her liberal positions. He has suggested she should go back to where she came from. During a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday, he returned to the topic of her origins. He stated she comes from one of the worst countries on the planet. The crowd responded with chants of deport.
House Democratic leaders issued a joint statement regarding the search. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Minority Whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar called the event deeply disturbing. They expressed concerns about the continued corrupt weaponization of the federal government against adversaries. These leaders vowed to deliver full accountability for what they termed a rogue abuse of power.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also weighed in on the situation
Walz accused the president of abusing his power to target political opponents weeks before an election. Some Republicans have offered a different perspective. Representative Nancy Mace suggested that if fraud were proven, Omar should be denaturalized and removed from the country.
The investigation reportedly involves whistleblowers, documents, and witness testimony. It has been described as a yearslong criminal investigation. The scope involves Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. attorney in Minneapolis, and the DOJ.
Internal checks within the government have also shifted. A source noted the department consulted its Public Integrity Section before the search. This unit historically approved investigations of members of Congress. However, the Trump administration reduced this section to about two lawyers following government cuts in early 2025. This is a significant change from the previous staff of 35 to 40 lawyers.
Omar faces Republican Dalia al-Aqidi in the upcoming election on November 3. This is a rematch of the 2024 race. Omar represents a safe Democratic seat in Minneapolis. She won that previous election by 50 percentage points.
The search fits into a wider pattern of activity during the current administration
The Department of Justice has charged several perceived political enemies. These include James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
Omar has previously described the president’s focus on her as an unhealthy and creepy obsession. She also noted that she and her family have received death threats linked to his rhetoric. The situation remains fluid as the midterm date approaches.
