Showtime’s Penny Dreadful Gives Us Supernaturally-Dark Victoriana and I’m So In

The story sounds so good and the actors are so wonderful and am I watching this yet?!

Showtime’s new series Penny Dreadful is hitting our screens soon, and this new trailer is pretty incredible. The psychosexual horror series weaves together the origin stories of classic monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein in Victorian London, and stars Eva Green, Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Helen McCrory, and more.

The show is named for the “penny dreadful” stories that were abundant in the 19th century: cheap, serialized fiction aimed at the working class, which often involved particularly sensational storylines. You can catch the Penny Dreadful premiere Sunday, May 11. Did I mention it’s also created and executive produced by the same guys who wrote and directed Skyfall?

Full disclosure: I did a Master’s in Victorian Sensation fiction and if I was ever to make my own TV show it would basically be exactly this and the casting is so good and it looks so creepy and oh man I think I need to lay down somewhere bye
