3.5/5 stars for Netflix's The Ripper.

As of right now, Wonder Woman 3 is on pause. That doesn't mean it's not happening or there aren't any plans; there's just a lot going on and, as Patty Jenkins is working on a Rogue Squadron movie for Lucasfilm, she has her hands full right this very second. Still, there is a future for Diana Prince—it just might not be the one that Patty Jenkins originally had planned.

Birds of Prey has the distinction of being the highest-grossing comic book movie of 2020, but it was supposed to be the beginning of a big year for female-led comic book movies. Instead, the disappointing box office it gained due to COVID, was a specter of the way Wonder Woman 1984 would fare.

Though 2020 was a year of heaviness, it was also a year of powerful Black creativity. From music and Film/TV to (of course) books, the abundance of work that emerged this year beautifully illustrated the nuances of the Black experience, while also making important social commentary on the shortcomings that still need to be confronted.

Flawed as it may be, I enjoyed 2018’s The Prom and though it did not last long on Broadway it still managed to get multiple Tony nominations in 2019 including for Best Actress with Caitlin Kinnunen. Which is why the Ryan Murphy adaptation which aired on Netflix is such a disappointment for how they treated Emma.

When it comes to excavating trauma and deep discomfort with compassion and understanding, the future is most assuredly female.
