Nobody Wants This creator Erin Foster disagrees with Adam Brody’s call for a free Palestine: ‘You know, it’s complicated’

Is it really complicated?

The creative force behind the Netflix hit Nobody Wants This, Erin Foster, recently addressed the political divide between her and the show’s star, Adam Brody. According to The Guardian, during a conversation on the Not Skinny Not Fat podcast, Foster spoke about Brody’s recent public comments regarding Israel’s genocide in Palestine. When asked about his support for a free Palestine, Foster made her position clear. “Everyone is entitled to a different opinion,” she stated.

The show, which explores the relationship between an agnostic podcast host and a rabbi, has become a major talking point. Foster noted that the environment on their set often mirrors the reality of many households today. “You know, it’s complicated,” she said. “I think our work environment, our set is very similar to dinner tables around the world where people are having debate and discussion and disagreeing.”

Foster emphasized that the show serves as a tribute to her own journey into Judaism. “As the creator of the show, all I can say is that I want our Jewish fans to know that I see you and I hear you and I understand how you feel,” Foster mentioned. She added, “The show has always been and always will be a love letter to Judaism. That is why I made this show. It’s because of how beautiful of an experience I’ve had becoming Jewish and being a Jewish person.”

Foster feels that the current cultural climate makes this representation vital

“Sitting here right now at this time in the world where there is almost zero positive representation of Jewish people, I think it’s so important to have that,” Foster explained. She reiterated that while she maintains a positive relationship with her lead actor, their views do not align on this specific issue. “While I love Adam, I also disagree with him. And that’s OK,” she said.

The controversy stems from an interview Brody gave to GQ last month. This was his first time speaking at length about his political views. “Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide. Put me down as wanting a free Palestine,” Brody said during the interview. He acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “It’s awful that it’s taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it’s reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago,” he told the publication.

Brody also touched upon why he had not spoken out sooner. He mentioned that the focus often remains on his acting work.

“I just answer the questions I’m asked,” Brody said, per Variety. “And it’s true. I’m not wearing a pin, so I’m not inviting a certain question, and perhaps I should. I really admire people who do. But 99% of what I’m asked about is about the show. I’m not trying to plead ignorance – here we are doing a political interview, so it makes sense that we wade into this territory – but I’ve never ducked a question, really, not a political question anyway.”

Foster has previously shared her thoughts on the genocide

In a post from 2021, she expressed her hope for a peaceful resolution. “Nothing that is happening in Israel/Palestine is acceptable or comfortable to look at,” she wrote at that time. “Innocent lives lost as casualties of war, as well as the atrocious lack of human rights that exist under a Hamas run government.”

She also outlined what she believes is a path toward peace. “There is a chance for peace here, and it involves a two state resolution where both exist next to each other, respecting each other’s beliefs, and sharing the holy land that all three major religions call sacred. Palestinians deserve to live in peace without fear. So do Jews.”

The show itself, which recently returned for its third season, follows the lives of Joanne Williams and Noah Roklov as they navigate their relationship and the lives of their siblings. Reviews for the new season have been positive, with critics noting that fans will likely find themselves drawn back into the story. The production continues to be a focal point for viewers as the cast and creator navigate their individual beliefs alongside the success of the series.

The broader political context remains intense. An independent UN inquiry in June found that Israel continues to commit genocide by targeting children in Gaza. This adds a layer of weight to the public discussions occurring among high-profile figures in the entertainment industry. The situation remains a significant point of public discourse as the third season of the show reaches audiences on Netflix.
