Mom says her toddler started choking after McDonald’s gave her spicy McNuggets instead of the regular ones: “She’s not even 2 years old”

That is one Happy Meal mix-up no parent wants to discover after their toddler has already taken a bite.

A late-night McDonald’s stop turned scary for one Ohio mom after she claims her toddler was handed spicy Chicken McNuggets instead of the regular ones she ordered. She did not realize anything was wrong until her daughter, who is not even 2 years old, was already eating them.

Shai Shai said she stopped at a McDonald’s in Russells Point, Ohio, around 10 p.m. on Sept. 21 while visiting family. She ordered two Happy Meals for her children, including a four-piece regular Chicken McNuggets meal for her youngest daughter.

Nothing about the order immediately stood out. Shai said it was dark in the car, she had never tried McDonald’s spicy nuggets herself, and the food looked normal enough that she had no reason to question what was inside the box.

Then her daughter started choking while eating one. “We did not know they were spicy until she was literally choking on one,” Shai wrote in a Facebook post describing what happened.

Shai said her daughter became extremely sick afterward and remained ill for roughly two to three hours. She recorded some of what happened but said she chose not to post the video because watching her child go through it was upsetting enough already.

McDonald’s reportedly offered two Happy Meal coupons

Shai said she contacted the restaurant’s manager after the incident and explained what had happened, including approximately when her family came through the drive-thru. According to her, the manager offered to send coupons for two Happy Meals.

That was not really what Shai wanted. She said she was trying to find out how the wrong nuggets ended up in her toddler’s meal and what McDonald’s planned to do to prevent the same mistake from happening again.

After giving the manager more details about the order, Shai says the conversation stopped. She eventually filed a claim through McDonald’s corporate customer service because she wanted the incident documented and taken more seriously.

Her post also raised questions about why she had not checked the nuggets before handing them to her daughter. Shai said she had ordered regular nuggets, and they looked like the food she expected, and she had no reason to assume McDonald’s had put something else in the box.

She also pointed to the possibility of allergies or sensitivities when explaining why order accuracy mattered so much to her. Shai did not say her daughter experienced an allergic reaction, but argued that accidentally serving a different product can become more serious when the customer is a very young child.

The backlash became a second fight entirely

Once Shai shared the story, the comments quickly shifted from what happened at McDonald’s to whether she was making too much of it. One commenter said fast-food mistakes happen and accused her of acting as though someone had purposely tried to harm her daughter.

That criticism hit a nerve because Shai says there had already been an argument with a worker before she received the food. She later clarified that she could not prove anyone intentionally switched the nuggets, but said the timing made the mistake more unsettling to her.

The reaction became heated enough that Shai posted again to explain what she was actually asking for. She said she was not planning to sue McDonald’s and was not trying to turn a wrong Happy Meal into a payout.

“I never said I was suing McDonald’s, nor am I planning to sue them,” she wrote. She said she wanted McDonald’s to explain how the mistake happened and take steps to address it, not simply offer replacement food.

That is where Shai says people are missing the point. She accepts that restaurant workers make mistakes, but she believes the restaurant still needs to address what happened when an employee gives the wrong food to a child who is not even 2 years old.
