Mary Poppins Returns to Bring Magic Back to Our Dreary Worlds in First Trailer

Recommended Videos

Guess what the wind blew in? The first trailer for Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns arrived during the Oscars last night, and the sequel to the 1964 classic looks perfectly magical.

It begins in the dark and gloomy streets of 1930 London, 25 years after the first film, as a storm carries a kite through the streets into the clouds. We get some quick glimpses at the new generation of Banks children, Michael and Jane (Ben Whishaw + mustache, Emily Mortimer), and a friendly lamplighter (Lin-Manuel Miranda). And who should descend, but Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt)! We’ve known that her costume would be amazing, but it’s great to see her in action with umbrella in hand.

In this new adaptation of P. L. Travers’ writing, Michael and his three children have a warm and loving home, but struggle after the loss of Michael’s wife. Jane, their loving aunt/now-union organizer and their housemaid Ellen (Julie Walters) try and help Michael, whose home is also on the verge of foreclosure. They’re surprised, however, with the return of Mary Poppins, back to bring back magic into their world. Meryl Streep, who doesn’t appear in the teaser, will also make an appearance as Topsy Tartlet, Poppins’ cousin.

While a Mary Poppins without Julie Andrews immediately makes one cautious, fans will be relieved to know Blunt has received her seal of approval. Along with Lin-Manuel Miranda and a bunch of new songs, we can’t wait to be charmed all over again by this Disney film.

Mary Poppins Returns comes to theaters on Christmas.
